1. Overview

Bread is the second most important supplier of energy (kilojoules) in the national diet after maize products. Apart from bread, bakers also produce other products like biscuits, pies and pizzas.

 

2. Local business environment

The latest President’s address on the South African Chamber of Baking website, www.sacb.co.za, gives an overview of the previous year and expectations going forward. Perusing the 2016 address, we see that 2016 was a tough year owing to a weakening rand and the drought. The implications of a possible economic downgrade to the economy (which indeed happened in 2017!) are spelt out. 

“Bread perspective: South Africa’s total bread production saw a notable growth in 2016, starting the year with 171 million loaves in January 2016 and closing with 182 million loaves in December 2016. The significant improvement was on brown bread production, which was 82 million loaves in January (4% below white bread production) and ended the year at 90 million loaves (1% above white bread production). In fact, from October to December 2016, brown bread production was consistently higher than white bread.” Agbiz Newsletter 21 February 2017.
